This is a classic look that will never go out of fashion, nothing glams you up more quickly than a slick of black liner and intense red lips – a look which typifies the 40’s and 50’s era. It does require some precision and don’t be shy when it comes to red lips, there is a shade that suits everyone! It’s a timeless look which commands attention so must be worn with confidence as it will turn heads!

I am a fan of this look as you can see from the picture below taken at Adelle's hen do :)

Adelle aka Mrs Peonies & Pearls kindly agreed to model for me on this occasion. I think it looks great on Adelle’s complexion and colouring and you don’t need to worry about having pale winter skin as that is what works best with a little blusher for this vintage look. I hope this tutorial inspires you to bring out the Vintage Vixen within!!

Prep your skin for foundation using No.7 iIluminating Fluid in Peach, paying particular attention to the cheekbones followed by MAC Prep + Prime for skin. I used Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation in 52 after this. Conceal any problem areas with a good concealer such as MAC’s Studio Fix, also use this to prime your eyelids ready for eyeshadow.

Cover your lids in a neutral shade slightly lighter than your skintone to open up the eyes, I used ‘Foxy’ matte eyeshadow from Urban Decay. Follow this by defining your brows with a good pencil in short, feathery strokes – Strong brows are a must for this look, ideally they should be thick yet defined but work with your natural shape and what suits you!

Create that 50’s feline flick using a liquid or gel liner, if you find this tricky try MAC’s Rapidblack Penultimate Eyeliner pen for more control. Whilst applying the liner pull the lid gently upwards from just below the brow bone to ensure your line is tight to the lashes.

Apply your mascara after curling lashes – I used MAC’s Zoom Lash which is great for thick yet un-clumpy lashes. For extra drama you could also add false lashes if you have time, MAC lashes are very good or for a cheaper alternative try Eyelure which are also good quality but I swear by DUO lash adhesive (available from MAC or Sally Hair & Beauty) on any lashes even if they come with glue!!

Add some colour to your cheeks with NARS blush in ‘Orgasm’ for a healthy looking flush. I also contoured the face slightly with MAC Mineralize skin finish in medium down the side of Adelle’s nose and to shade her cheekbones. This is a bronze shade so I used this sparingly as porcelain skin suits this look best.

Next your lips, a glam pillarbox red pout is essential for this look! Firstly, line your lips with an intense red such as MAC liner in ‘Red’. For extra staying power I also applied the liner in the centre of the lips which will give the lipstick something to cling to.

Finally fill in your lips with your lipstick using a lip brush, I used MAC’s ‘Lady Danger’ matte lipstick for this look. Blot lips and re-apply for extra lasting colour.

Finished! Now all you need to do is get that hair in rollers and practise your victory rolls to complete the look. Or you could cheat and visit Ninas Hair Parlour in London, they do fab retro styles from all eras.

..and pose! Do your best pin-up style pose. Looking good, Adelle!!
